With the political upheaval yet to settle, Rivers State was further thrown into mourning today. Rt. Honourable Tonye Ezekiel Harry, the immediate past Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, passed on on his way to Europe for urgent medical attention. A reliable source said that Tonye Harry died in Libya enroute France for specialist medical treatment over stroke.
It was further revealed that the flight crew decided to make an unscheduled stop-over in Tripoli, the capital of Libya, where his corpse was disembarked to enable the flight continue its journey.
Harry, who represented Degema Constituency, served as Speaker of the House between 2007 and 2011 when he was succeeded by Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Dan Amachree.
Tonye collapsed at his residence while exercising earlier this week and the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker confirmed that he was to be flown abroad for further treatment.
Born 21st November, 1962 Tonye was first elected into the Rivers State House of Assembly in 1999 making him one of the oldest members of the state legislature. He was an avid lawn tennis player and had sponsored tournaments in Port Harcourt. An Accountant and holder of separate MBA in Marketing and Corporate Governance, Tonye was a political leader in his native Degema and Kalabari as well.
